Google, Craigslist, and how I know they're learning

Day 8 - Go to the library

Today was the first day of the advent that we were not able to do what we'd planned. We were going to go to the library, but Mike discovered a very flat tire on his Land Cruiser when he went out for work this morning. He took the Sequoia, and we were left carless. So instead of the library, we played at home and made cookies for the cookie swap we're going to on Thursday.

Spencer came up to me today and asked me if I thought Craigslist was started by someone named Craig. I told him I didn't know, but that it probably was, and we'd have to look it up to know for sure. He disappeared then, and came back just a few minutes later to give me a brief history of the site (It was indeed started by a Craig, Craig Newmark in 1995. He originally started it to post notices about events and happenings in his local city of San Francisco, and it grew to include sales, jobs, and apartments. He devoted himself fulltime to the site in 1999). The boys like to joke that they are not homeschooled, but Googleschooled, and for as much as they Google for information it is not far from the truth!

I love little moments like that, both because it's just fun to learn interesting facts alongside the kids, and because it's a tangible and visible answer to the question "How do you know they're learning if you don't test them/grade them/quiz them?"

How do I know they're learning?

That one little five minute exchange showed - among other things - that Spencer has learned:

1. How to recognize a problem, and quickly find a way to solve it.
2. How to use the computer, to get where he needs to go, deduce the best keywords to use, and type and spell well enough to search for what he's looking for.
3. How to sort through a large amount of information (a search for the history of Craigslist returns about 15 million results) and find what's most relevant
4. How to quickly read, scan, and summarize text
5. How to relay that information succinctly to someone else

That is real learning! And the cool thing is that a year from now while I most likely will have forgotten the details, he will know them - names, dates and locations.

I see them learning. I see them learning all the time.

And finally, a few days ago we completed a project that has been in limbo for months now and today I was able to grab a picture. We were going to move the big boys out to the toy room, and have Tegan and Everett share their current room. But midway through the move (we had dressers hanging out in our computer room in the middle of the house for months) I realized that while they were anxious to have their own space, they really weren't quite ready to sleep there. Plus Everett still wanted roommates, and Tegan was still quite happily sharing our bed. So we cleaned up the toyroom, moved out some toys, moved in their dressers, but kept all the beds as-is. We picked up another TV ($25 from Craigslist. Thank you Craig Newmark.) and hooked up the PS2. We set up the futon that's been sitting in there mostly unused and usually buried under "stuff." They now have their own hangout room slash den slash video game room, and they are very excited to decorate it and make it their own. And, we now have the PS2, PS3, and Wii all hooked up to different TVs, and could theoretically have all three systems in use at once. Awesome.

For the Birds

Day 7 - Make ornaments and have a playdate with new friends

The boys had already designated their suncatchers as ornaments, so today they decided to string popcorn to put on the trees outside. They didn't do it for too long, but they had fun, and the birds got a tasty treat.

This afternoon, we had friends over to play... new friends who are also homeschoolers, and share so many of our same ideals. While we're friends with all kinds of people (and I encourage the kids to believe that differences are good!) sometimes it's nice to connect with people who are on the same page in life. It was a very refreshing, and much needed, visit.

Less than three weeks till Christmas!

Day 6

Day 6 - Walk to the playground

I'm not feeling too Christmasy at the moment, so tonight I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves! We walked to a playground right down the street(that for some reason we didn't know about until we'd lived here for 3 years) and enjoyed another nice December day in Phoenix. We capped off the day with homemade soup, my new favorite dinner.

Up

Day 5 - Have a movie and popcorn night.

Last night, Tegan and I picked up the movie, Up, in anticipation of tonight's movie night. The plan was to pop popcorn to eat while we watched - and we did - but we came home from grocery shopping so tired and hungry that we also included chips, crackers, and hummus. We pulled out our trusty (and dusty!) air popcorn popper, which Everett and Tegan have never seen before, and they were thrilled to watch it in action.

Tegan had just pushed him away in this picture, because she didn't want him to be in her shot:

Reluctantly sharing her space, but ready to push him away again at a moment's notice. He was happy to be in the picture, but had his defenses up just in case...

All was forgiven as the popper turned on, and they watched it do its work, together:

After the snacks were ready, we watched the movie. It was wonderful!

I'm the first person to admit that at times I'm not very personally excited about some of the TV shows or movies I watch with the kids. I enjoy them because THEY enjoy them, and it makes me happy to share in their happiness. But that was not the case this time, as I was watching just as intently as the rest of them. I even confess to shedding a tear or two at the end. Yes, I've turned into my mother.

Great, great movie, enjoyed by all. Two enthusiastic thumbs up.

Professor Plum did it

Day 4 - Have a board game night

The boys picked Clue, something they haven't played in ages, and decided they wanted to play with Daddy. Since Tegan's idea of board games is still to grab the pieces and either throw them or run away with them as fast as she can, she and I went to Blockbuster to rent a movie, and ooohed and ahhhhed over everyone's Christmas lights.

It's a beautiful night, and a beautiful season (except for the man screaming obscenities at the woman who accidentally cut him off in the video store parking lot. Merry Christmas to him.)

Since there's no place to go...

Day 3 - Make paper snowflakes & mail holiday cards to thank our troops

The kids and I stayed close to home today, enjoying some stillness after a whole day out yesterday. Everett and I made paper snowflakes (Paxton just made one, and Spencer opted out) and in between snipping and folding, he made several virtual snowflakes too. Love this site!

Snow Days

We also went to this site, Let's Say Thanks, to choose some cards to send to those serving overseas.

And finally, a little Everett funny to share from the day: This morning's Jesse Tree ornament was a ladder, representing Jacob's dream. I started reading the passage to them, explaining about a dream with a ladder that rose all the way to heaven. Everett's eyes lit up with recognition.

"Hey, I remember that!"

"Oh you heard about it in church?"

"Yeah..." Thinks about it some more. "No, wait. I think maybe it was on Tom and Jerry. And it was an escalator, not a ladder. But it did go all the way up to the clouds!"

I love him.

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...

Day 2 - a trip to the Phoenix Zoo!

Today we met friends at Zoo for a fun afternoon. No words are really needed.... they had a great time as always. On the way home, they entertained themselves (and their mother) by making up new words to The 12 Days of Christmas, using different zoo animals for each of the days.

Today's Jesse tree ornament was a ram, to depict the story of Abraham and Isaac. Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son Isaac to prove his devotion and obedience to God. He was about to do so when God intervened and provided a ram for the sacrifice instead.

Genesis 22:11-12 "The Lord's messenger called to him from heaven, 'Abraham, Abraham!' 'Yes, Lord,' he answered. 'Do not lay your hand on the boy,' said the messenger. 'Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son."

No matter how many times I read it, I am completely awed by this story. I remember hearing it as a kid, and thinking it was powerful even back then, but I hadn't the slightest idea of how it would affect me as parent, imagining I was asked to sacrifice my own child.

Decorating on a Shoestring

Day 1 - Take a trip to the dollar store for something new to decorate for Christmas.

We have a Dollar Tree right on our corner. I love Dollar Tree because: 1. Everything's a dollar, and 2. They literally have EVERYTHING. I've yet to do it, but if I really really wanted to, I could buy a pair of underwear for a dollar. While I tend to buy my underwear elsewhere, the dollar store is awesome for candy, spices, office and paper supplies, gift bags, etc. And it's perfect for small, seasonal items that cost 10 times as much in other stores (but really aren't any better quality)

Today the boys picked some Christmas sun catchers to paint, some window clings, garland to put on the mantel with the advent calendar, and some little decorative white doves. I also got a pretty runner for my table, new dry erase markers, and my can't-leave-without-them box of Milk Duds. Total cost: $12. The little countdown chalkboard was also a dollar store purchase, from last year.

The garland was so long I was able to cut it in half, and have one for both of my fire places:

Tegan was sleeping when the boys painted their suncatchers:

But she loved putting little snowflakes on the windows when she woke up:

Tomorrow we're venturing a little further from home..
